June is a month of beginnings and ends. School is winding down as we scuttle towards the start of summer. The excitement of holidays to come and the albeit brief change of pace they bring keep everyone going.
All the peonies in the garden have faded, but the roses are a beautiful distraction. Blousy and fragrant, they perfume the air, making it an extra lovely space to work in. Combined with the scent of honeysuckle, it’s just this side of heaven.
Snapdragon, stock, nigella, and larkspur add pops of color and texture, creating a secret garden feel in the middle of Media, Pennsylvania. Many leisurely evenings will be spent pottering around (plucking stray weeds!) with a glass of icy rosé in hand.
June is also a month of waiting. The summer blooms have yet to arrive but are much anticipated. Sunflowers, zinnias, and sweetpeas. A multitude of new flowers and foliage are being trialed this year to see what will thrive here. This is the best kind of experiment.
Dahlias are sending up their lush, verdant growth—a sure sign that blooms are on their way. I try not to rush the seasons and take in what each has to offer, but it’s hard not to get excited. The riot of colors and shapes that will fill the garden from late summer until the first frost is incredibly happy-making to me.
But before that happens, let’s just slow down and enjoy the blue skies and sunny days ahead.
