Monday, 04 March
Today I had the great privilege of volunteering at the Philadelphia Flower Show. I opted to work the very early first shift which ended up being an extremely smart move and my efforts were rewarded. I got to see the show with quite literally no one there. It was an incredible experience that I’ll never forget.
Tuesday, 05 March
My son was sent home sick, today. I’m really over the whole sick season. I feel like there has been at least one of us ill fairly consistently since Christmas.
Saturday, 09 March
My poppy seedlings are starting to emerge. I’ve had mixed luck with them in the past so we’ll see what they want to do, this year. I may try direct sowing more once the ground warms up and there is no more threat of frost.
The rain today was relentless. The roads were flooded, this evening, on my way back from dinner with friends. If you’re in the Delaware County, Pennsylvania, area I highly recommend Il Granaio in Glen Mills. It’s consistently good.
Sunday, 10 March
Wrapped boxes for the gala at my son’s school before dinner with family. Short rib lasagna. The perfect food for a ridiculously cold and windy day.
I also walked the garden and noticed there has been a lot of growth. Daffodils will probably be ready for harvesting in the next week or so. I’m concerned about them selling. I’m not good with marketing.
Tuesday, 12 March
The very un-fancy, yellow daffodils that have been in our yard since the house was probably built are starting to bloom. I don’t care how plain they are, it was such a welcome sight.
Friday, 15 March
Beware the Ides of March.
Today the weather was incredible. Sunny and in the 70s. I took an hour to do some garden cleanup. I spotted fritillaries and anemone popping up. As happy as that made me I also felt like if I had a greenhouse or tunnel I could have had something blooming by now like many of the farmers I follow on Instagram. I need to stay off of there and focus on my journey.
Saturday, 16 March
Began the day with a flower arranging class at the Cut Flower Exchange in Conshohocken. The focus was on using spring flower bulbs. We used birch branches to create the structure to secure the flowers in the vase. Will definitely use that technique again. The class and instructors were great.
Many hours in the afternoon blissfully pottering around the garden unaware of the world around me. Hours of weeding and raking and planting out sweet peas were so good for my soul. Fingers crossed the voles don’t eat them!
Sunday, 17 March
Harvested the first daffodils of the season, this morning! Been waiting for this moment for a long time. Now to find my customers. A minor detail. Ha!
Is there anything duller than sitting in bed, watching Gardener’s World, and typing up the values of silent auction items that I’m helping out with? Maybe not but it was heaven to me after a day of watching a school play and categorizing auction items at my son’s school. I’ve missed Monty Don!
Monday, 18 March
A whirlwind day. Started off on an early train to the Reading Terminal Market in Philly to collect an auction donation. I wish I could have stayed to wander the city a bit. I definitely could be happy living in a city. My years in London were some of my very best.
After that I straight to my Monday volunteering at my son’s former school.
The best part of the day was wandering around Costco, this evening, purchasing up things I never knew I needed. And one of those so bad yet so good $5 chickens.
Hope you’re enjoying the LAST day of winter! I for one am ready for spring.
