The last day of the first month…a month of Mondays. I feel like a survivor. It truly was a difficult month for a lot of reasons and I’m glad to see it ending.

Even though we’re in the bleak mid-winter it really hasn’t felt that way since the snow melted. I’m deeply appreciative although I know it shouldn’t be this way. I’m concerned about how this will affect my apple trees. Only time will tell.

Met with my long-time (incredible) contractor to discuss breathing new life into my over ten year old chicken coop. I long for chickens but we have far too much wildlife and now I have a dog. It’s going to be repurposed as a grow room/potting shed. We’ll have electric ran to it. Ultimately I think this will make my gardening life so much easier.

Went to a very long meeting, this evening, about soliciting donations for the gala being held at my son’s school, in April. I’m putting together a garden planter to donate. A very nice garden planter. Full of incredible stuff that I’ll have trouble partying with. I’m only half joking. Posh petals for the lucky winner!

Hello February! Goodbye dry January!

The day has mostly been sunny so it’s off to a good start. Feels almost spring-like outside. Found a couple of crocus hiding under a lavender plant outside my door. Its cheerful color made my day.

Friday, 02 February

Spring is arriving six weeks early according to Punxatawny Phil. Good thing because I was going to go up there and get him if he said anything different. He lives to see another year.

I’m heartbroken. I did a walkthrough of my garden, today. My ranunculus appears to have been destroyed by something that decided to live among them. I found a nest of some sort, as well. Considering a vole ran past me on my mooch around I’m assuming he or she is the culprit. Holes are in my tulip beds. I won’t be deterred, however. Plans are now in the works to convert everything in the garden to raised beds. Where is all the wildlife when I need them? I have hawks, owls, and fox in abundance. They’re slacking.

I deserved the very large glass of wine I had with dinner.

Saturday, 03 February

Lunch with family and then the movies with my mother. I can’t remember having a day this leisurely in ages, and really should do it more often.

Sunday, 04 February

We started cleaning out the chicken coop, today. And when I say we I mean my husband. The thought of what’s probably living in there just gives me the chills. And I know for certain at least one groundhog lives underneath. I’ll stick to planning what I envisage for the coop. I’m definitely looking forward to moving the seed starting operation to a location closer to the garden. And hoping to squeeze in a cozy spot for dining too.

Hope you’re having a lovely week!
