Monday, 22 April

Big, gorgeous, blue skies and golden sunshine can do nothing to erase the wind and chill. I can’t even believe I just wrote that on this date. Where is the spring warmth?

A swan about the garden is a lesson in discovery. The allium buds are beginning to make their appearance. Many of my iris will likely be in flower in the next week or two. I fell hopelessly in love with them a few years ago and keep adding new varieties to the garden, every year. They make great cut flowers and some of them have a delicious scent. The peonies are chugging along, some with fat buds that look like they’re getting close to the perfect stage for cutting.

Many of my dahlias from last year have successfully overwintered. This brings me great joy. I’ll be moving them to a new location in another week or so. We’re working on a new, separate, dedicated space for dahlias. I’ve order over 60 new tubers, this year, and it became clear that they needed their own home.

Wednesday, 24 April

It feels like spring today with the addition of wind for good measure. Planted a few new roses (another obsession of mine) and the new dahlia garden was tilled. Next up is the fencing. I peacefully coexist with a large amount of wildlife but my flowers are off limits. Rows will be laid out, after that, and paths put down in between. Hopefully the steadily increasing amount of dahlia tubers arriving by the day will be planted the first weekend in May.

The petals on the Kwanzaa cherry are falling around like snow. Every year I swear I’m going to picnic under it when in bloom and I never do. Next year.

Thursday, 25 April

Rose of May daffodils. I completely forgot about them. I’m hoping to have a few for the Mother’s Day arrangements. It feels strange to be on daffodil watch while waiting on peonies. We’re having yet another frost advisory tonight, though, so I’m not getting my hopes up. We’ve been having nights in the upper 30s which may take the daffodils out. We’ll see. I hope for the best.

I’m going to brag a little now. My son has been invited to a ceremony next week as he is in the top ten percent of his class at school. I’m so proud of him. He doesn’t want to go but I’m hoping he’ll change his mind. He doesn’t give himself enough credit.

Friday, 26 April

I planted a teeny yellow lilac, today. It’s hard to imagine it will ever reach the eight feet by eight feet it’s meant to be. It won’t flower for many years but when it does I’m sure it will be heaven.

My puppy, Willow, isn’t feeling well. Took her to the vet today. She had a 105°f fever. Poor thing. Lyme was ruled out but hopefully we’ll know more on Monday when the results of her bloodwork come back. In the meantime she’s on an antibiotic that seems to be working. She’s acting more like herself again.

Sunday, 28 April

We had my husband’s team over for an early dinner, today. My husband cooked the mains, chicken and prime rib. Everyone else brought appetizers, sides and desserts. I was in charge of flowers.

It was a nice way to end the weekend.

Spring is really and truly here for the duration, I think, I hope. Only a month late. Looking forward to planting out the rest of my seedlings over the next week. Then on to dahlias!

Have a lovely week!
